In 2006 Monkee Genes was created out of frustration, an industry that was and still is, having a huge impact on the environment. We wanted to offer something fresh and timeless, with an eco and ethical conscience.
Organic cotton was considered a ‘tree huggers’ fabric and sustainability was not a recognised term. Fast fashion was on the rise, factory working hours were being extended, yet their salaries declining. We hated seeing an industry we were so passionate about be a part of this!
Monkee Genes was born to ensure from the beginning, any jean produced provided a living wage for all involved and good working conditions. Along the road we have continued to learn how we can minimise our impact on the earth, while creating great denim for you. Fast forward to 2022, we are reflecting on our journey so far, what we have learned and the work we still must do, in continuingly difficult times for the world.
Visiting our partners in the process, we have learned we need to continue our work on yarns, washes and designing considered garments. We continue to learn & want to bring all of this to you! Being completely honest, we have learned that the only way to save our planet is to stop mass consumption.
Unfortunately, we have a lot of work to do to get us there, especially in the fashion industry, however we can produce a limited quantity of denim, sell for longer periods (do you know some retailers dramatically discount their products if they haven’t sold within 8 weeks!!) and ensure we provide a quality that allows you buy confidently from Monkee Genes knowing that our styles can be a staple in your wardrobe until your wear them out (repair and wear out again) or sell them.
We are on our own journey; we want you to join us.
No matter the stage you are on, if you are just starting or have been on it since 2006 with us, help us make the planet a better place by only purchasing new items that you truly need to replace, making your wardrobe timeless and more sustainable. Then finally, when you decide you no longer need your Monkee Genes, sell then on, donate to considered charity or upcycle them. Whatever it may be, we ask that you don’t throw them away!
It does not matter where you are on the journey, you have started, keep going!
